Creating a hybrid instrument capable of live surround sound and Hi-Definition video manipulation
My Studio is my Instrument
As a New Media Artist, learning how to control my medium is a daily challenge. The only equipment I had access to was overused and poorly maintained. I was forced to develop my technical skills very quickly. I had to learn to calibrate, test, and troubleshoot a plethora of hardware and software spanning video, audio, print, and web.
This encouraged me to build my own studio and develop my own hybrid workflows. The facilities at SCAD were top-notch, however, I required more modularity and reliability from my studio environment. My home studio allows me to multitask between multiple computers simultaneously: I can back up old projects on one machine, while rendering on a second, and painting graphics on a third.
All of this is possible because of a low-cost hi-speed network consisting of firewire drives and a gigabit ethernet backbone. My goal is threefold: how do I make my studio an instrument? How do I make the technology transparent so it does not get in the way of art making? How do I create a self sustainable environment/space for the instrument to resonate in?

Multitasking on four computers simultaneously.

Backing up work.

Authoring DVDs.

Rendering my piece Horology, for Monitor Madness.

Synchronizing sound and video with a timecode burn-in.

Working late into the night as usual.

I have a plethora of plugs and adapters so I can modify an RCA or BNC cable to fit into anything. This modularity allows me to be very flexible and troubleshoot very quickly when in the field.
